3 Mobile Apps Every Senior Should Have

  • Priyanka Tomar
  • If there is one thing we can say about the day and age we live in, it would be that we are blessed with the technology previous generations never knew existed. That was probably because it didn’t exist, that is! With that understanding, just think of all the ways technology can give today’s seniors a better quality of life, including all those mobile apps we have all begun taking for granted.

However, what if those mobile apps can be a literal lifeline for seniors living alone or with serious medical conditions? Those should never be taken for granted or trivialized. Because of technology just like this, seniors are living longer than ever before, and they are doing so with better health and much greater optimism. Let’s look at a few of those apps our seniors have come to rely on.

Facebook Mobile and Messenger – Free for iOS and Android

Who doesn’t have a Facebook page? Whether a senior in Missouri, for example, are living alone or in one of the amazing assisted living Creve Coeur senior residences, Facebook Mobile and Facebook Messenger can be the way they stay in touch with family and friends. Messenger (Chats) also has a video chat feature so that whether they are sitting out on the patio or in the kitchen brewing a cup of coffee, it’s like having loved ones right beside them.

That’s technology never before available and the connectivity serves as a lifeline to many that we hold dear – and make no mistake about it. That connectivity truly is a lifeline keeping them afloat in an otherwise lonely life.

Medisafe – Free for iOS and Android

One of the things we most often worry about with our seniors is if they remember to take their medications as prescribed. Some of these meds are vital to their health as is the case with heart medications and many others that keep aging body parts functioning. Medisafe is available for both Apple and Android devices and once the medications are typed in, the app does the rest!

It sends prompts (alarms) to remind them that it’s time to take a given medication. For any senior suffering from the initial stages of dementia, this app, and apps of its kind can be lifesavers.

    iHealth My Vitals

Along with another app from iHealth, Gluco-Start, these apps monitor various vitals such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen, and glucose levels. Both require external measuring devices, but the information is sent to the app to be recorded. In this way, seniors can keep an ongoing log of their vitals to discuss with their primary care doctors. They can be truly invaluable aids in monitoring the state of their health between visits so that doctors and other providers can alter care plans as needed.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of mobile apps that can make major differences in the quality of life within the senior population. Whether it’s staying in touch with friends and family living great distances from them or monitoring the state of their health, this technology has made life easier and a whole lot more enjoyable than anything ever available before. If your aging loved ones don’t currently have apps like these, they are free to download and use, so encourage them to visit their app store today.
