3 Ways to Support Your Elderly Relatives

  • Alex Smith
  • If you’re lucky enough to have elderly relatives, you probably know how much joy they can bring to your life and the lives of your family. However, with this joy can come to a lot of worries, especially as they get much older.

Not only may you have to start thinking about life without them, but they also probably have several needs that need to be seen. It can be difficult to know how to truly help and support them, but it might be a lot easier than you think. Here are just a few ways you can do this.

    Contact the Right People

Contacting the person or service you need to speak to can be difficult as you get older. This is especially the case in the modern age, as technology moves much faster than many elderly people can keep up with.

Being there for them to make these contacts and have these conversations can be a great way to support them. Whether they need to order another prescription or want to video chat with a long-distance family member, sorting this out for them will be a great weight off their shoulders.

    Make Sure They are Comfortable

Although this is important in the small sense, as being comfortable in a certain chair or bed is vital as you get older, it’s equally important in a more general sense.

Speaking with your relatives and asking whether there was anything that could be done to make things a little more comfortable for them is a lovely thing to do and can be a real eye-opener once you get them talking.

You may be surprised at just how many things they put up with but aren’t happy about. This could be something small, like struggling to get up the stairs in their big house or needing more assistance than they used to.

In these cases, senior communities are often a great answer, as they allow older people to keep a good amount of their independence while also getting the help that they need.

    See Them More

If you’re young and have a busy life, it’s very easy for weeks to go by before you get a chance to see your elderly relative again. While it may be easy for you to not notice this time apart, if you’re older, and live a much slower life, it can feel like a very long time.

Promising to see them, even just a little bit more, can make a difference in their life and routine. Studies have found that older people deteriorate much faster when they are lonely. No one wants to feel like they haven’t seen anyone they care about in a while.

It can be hard to know how to help your loved ones when they get past a certain age, but it can be much simpler than you think. In most cases, just being there for them when they need it is truly all you need to do.
