Tips for Improving Your Chances of Getting into College

  • Zayn Tindall
  • Going to college is an experience that a lot of people are interested in for many reasons. Firstly, there is a great sense of achievement in completing a degree, and it’s a good opportunity to expand your knowledge. There is also the chance to make new friends and learn to live independently if you’re going straight after high school. These are just some of the benefits that college can offer, so it is easy to see why people are attracted to this next step in their education. If you are planning to apply to colleges soon, below are a few tips to help improve your chances of getting accepted.

Broaden Your Experiences Outside of the Classroom

Getting good grades is a big part of getting accepted into college, but while education is a priority, what you do outside of the classroom is important as well. This is because activities outside the classroom can give a little bit more insight into your aspirations and interests, and they can also be a good indicator of how motivated you are as an individual. For example, getting involved in one or two extra-curricular activities at school can help, or perhaps a part-time job. Even volunteering can be a positive experience to list on your application, and you can also discuss these experiences and interests in your college interview.

    Do Your Research

When you’re applying to colleges, they will want to know what attracted you to that specific university. Why do you think this place of education will be a better fit for you than any other? Take the time to do your research on the colleges that you are interested in, as this can work in your favor when writing letters to go with your application or when you are asked about this in your interview. This includes information on the courses that you have applied for and the college as an institution.

Make Sure You Have the Right Grades

As mentioned previously, your GPA does play an important role in getting accepted into a college, and they will all have a list of entry requirements that they expect applicants to reach. You can use resources like CampusReel to help you figure out what the entry requirements are at the colleges you are interested in, as well as further tips and advice on higher education. If you do think you are struggling with your grades, consider hiring a tutor for additional support.

Be Mindful of What You Post on Social Media

In the digital age, you do need to think carefully about what you’re sharing on your social media accounts. If colleges see irresponsible or negative activity, this can paint you in a less flattering light and might dissuade them from accepting you. At the very least, make sure that you are checking the privacy settings on your social media accounts so that your pages aren’t public, or if you don’t want to do that, be sensible about what you choose to share with your followers.

If you are getting ready to start applying for colleges, keep these tips in mind and see if they could improve your chances of getting accepted at your dream school.
