Social Media

The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

While there are some plus points of using social media, there are also some drawbacks of using social media as well. People use social media to interact with new people or to interact with existing friends online so they can keep in touch all the time. While this may be positive, there are also some setbacks to using social media excessively. Social media tends to take a toll on your mental health if you use it more than you should. In order to use your social media and monitor it, you need a stable internet connection such as Xfinity wifi which gives you a very reliable internet connection to keep a check on your health 24/7. You can even make a combo of the internet with wearable smart gadgets and keep track of everything regarding your health such as heart rate or the calories you burn. Here are some of the negative impacts of excessively using social media that you should be avoiding.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

If you use social media too much, you would see that there are too many social gatherings going on that you could not be a part of. Quite naturally, you would feel left out, and eventually, you would feel very down for not being able to join in whatever everyone is experiencing. This is exactly what the fear of missing out or FOMO is and quite a lot of people suffer from it. It is a legitimate mental problem that people face and it is increasing as people have a greater inclination toward using social media. FOMO is the fear that you would be left out while the rest of the world would be out there having fun.

Anxiety

Using too much social media also causes feelings of anxiety and makes you fidgety. There are people online who you get intimidated by and they can trigger feelings of anxiety. Sometimes the internet can make you feel stressed when you see that there are differences between you and other people, which also contributes to FOMO. You feel anxious if you miss out on important information or if you somehow miss being a part of a group conversation or an important group chat.

Depression

The internet is full of news that is depressing, there is news about murders and other graphical things that can make people sad to the point that they might start going through depression. This is why there are anti-depression campaigns on the internet that advocate for mental health. There are videos on the internet on animal cruelty and occupation all over the world. If not given a trigger warning, these internet posts can very easily cause depression amongst their users. Reading a lot of negative comments and watching a lot of bullying can also affect your mental health, therefore it is best to keep your mental health in check.

Isolation

There are also times when using too much of the internet can cause your social batteries to drain out. That is when you do not feel like using social media much anymore. What you do is, you start isolating yourself, which is not a healthy thing to do. You stop interacting with other people and start sitting in solitude. It is always best to vent out to people in a healthy way so that you can also cater to your own mental health. While you use your Xfinity internet connection, you can keep your social media and your mental health at bay. If you have problems with the internet, you could always contact Xfinity customer service and they will fix your issue in no time.

Indulgence in Self-Absorption

Excessively posting about yourself can also cause you to become obsessed with yourself. You become more and more self-centered as you continue to post information about yourself and you start posting selfies and just do not stop. Being too obsessed with yourself will also cause problems when you interact with people in person because then you would be too full of yourself and you would have a hard time interacting with people and they might see you as someone who is repulsive.

In Conclusion

These are some things you should avoid while using social media because the idea behind social media is to use it for fun. The last thing that social media should be doing is to be a nuisance for you to the point that your mental health starts getting affected. Be sure to use the internet more positively and always keep your mental health in check.
