Foods to Avoid After an Ostomy

Life after ostomy becomes a bit different and systematic. It subjects the ostomate to adapt to an entirely different pattern – of doing and of avoiding things. Well, it may be temporary, largely depending on the intensity/level of ostomy.

Now, feeding. Apart from the fact that you are subjected to a balanced diet, chances are that you do not get to eat what you naturally love. I know, right? You’d miss those sweet treats.

Well, worry no more! Let us, through this article, provide you maximum support in ensuring a balanced diet and getting you back on your feet in no time! Let’s go! By the way, check out these cool urostomy belts.

Ostomy Dieting

Here, guidelines are created for you, and they show you what to avoid after an ostomy. But before that, check out these recommended eating patterns:

Eat Small Often.

Proper nutrition begins with consuming small quantities of food 3 to 4 times daily. 6 small-quantity meals will do, instead of having 3 large pot-full meals. And, eat them at specific periods during the day to maintain bowel movement, aid food processing, and prevent an unnecessary pile-up of gas.

Eat Slowly.

Yep, I know it could be delicious. But take your time in munching that meal. Else, diarrhea, gas pile-up, constipation, and foul odor release – from indigestion would knock diligently at your door.

Drink Liquid Regularly.

8 to 10 ounces of liquid daily will do. However, ensure you hydrate more on sunny days, or during/after exercises. And yeah, the water of course – juices, tea, and co”ee are nice but don’t substitute them for water. Alcohol can only be drunk in a one-time glass cup.

Foods to Avoid

Ostomy-problem foods. Some foods should be limited or totally avoided – they pose problems during digestion and add-on crises to the body system. Let’s identify them:

Milk and Dairy Products:

As much as milking is recommended to you, avoid/limit:

High-fiber or high-fat milk products, such as whole milk, sherbet, and the regular bar ice cream.

Milk and dairy products contain lactose. Diarrhea is imminent after consuming them.

Grains:

Avoid/limit:

High-fiber grains, such as whole wheat or grain bread, quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, and wheat bran cereal.

Vegetables:

Avoid high-fiber vegetables, those are raw and crunchy vegetables. Many of them aid bad odor and gas in some people. Mushrooms should also be avoided.

Meats and Proteins

High-fat foods such as fried meats, fish and poultry products, potato chips, and other fatty meats.

High-fiber proteins – dried or canned legumes, involving beans, peas, and lentils.

Also, avoid spicy foods.

Note: One should also try to avoid the beneficial CBD oil as that may also have negative results.

Carbonated and Alcoholic Drinks [Beer]

This should be avoided specifically for the sake of the high amount of gas, as well as the sugar contents in them.

Sweet Treats

Such as cakes, chocolates, sweets candies, and cookies.

Fruits

Avoid apples, strawberries, grapes, and blueberries.

And fruit juice like prune juice and grape juice.

On the other hand, you are advised to consume more liquid and bland foods – foods generally not included above. They aid weight gain and totally prevent constipation and crises from the ostomy bag.
